Abstract

Purpose: To describe attributes of nursing practice readiness required for new graduate nurses to improve their performance and clinical adaptation.

Methods: Focus group interviews and individual interviews were conducted with 7 new graduate nurses, 10 experienced nurses with preceptor experience, and 2 nursing managers from tertiary and general hospitals in Seoul and Gyeonggi, Korea. Qualitative data were analyzed using inductive content analysis of Elo and Kyngas (2008).

Results: Attributes of nursing practice readiness for new graduate nurses were derived as cognitive ? psychomotor dimension and affective dimension. Cognitive ? psychomotor dimension consisted of ability to perform nursing activities, understanding of work flow, clinical judgement, and prioritizing abilities. Affective dimension included confidence in patient care, positive perception of their own values, and stress management.

Conclusion: It is necessary to assess the degree of nursing practice readiness and provide additional education for insufficient areas when new graduate nurses start to work independently so that new graduate nurses can provide safe and high quality nursing through a successful transition process.
